The World of Rendil
The Forest Kingdom of Anteer is snow-covered hills and deep evergreen forests against a backdrop of mountaintops that reach high into the cloud sphere. As the southernmost region of Rendil, five to six months of every year the Anteers see snow fall. The icy weather and dense wilderness allow its hardy folk to work largely autonomously from the central hegemony. King Urethal IV claims fealty of most of its lands, but the sprawling, frigid hillside prevents his military from asserting its dominance. Most residents of Anteer live in tightly bound fishing and hunting villages. When monsters or barbarians threaten their peaceful existence, these communities rapidly gather together into a central hearth to defend themselves against the invaders. Because of this, the people of this land rarely refuse a hot bowl of stew to civilized travelers, seeing most everyone as potential brother-in-arms against rampaging hordes descending from the mountains.
The Anteers have existed this way for as long as anyone can remember. History of the region says that once a great dragon lived in these Anteer Mountains, but that he was killed by Urethal the First, who was crowned king for slaying the beast. Today, his descendant Urethal IV is frustrated by this inability to establish control over these frozen lands. His tax collectors continue to come in with little coin and his sheriffs are completely ineffectual. The people view him as a failing tyrant, flailing against the decline of his dynasty. Urethal IV sees himself as a unifier, desperate to carve a nation out of this untamed landscape.
